AARP founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, urged 50+ individuals to redefine the aging process and engage in “the great army of service.” She asserted that by volunteering in their communities, older adults can inspire changes that will collectively strengthen the voice of the aging population.

The Andrus Award for Community Service is AARP’s most prestigious volunteer honor. The recipient of the award is an exceptional, 50+ volunteer who has encapsulated the values of Dr. Andrus throughout their work with any state organization.

To properly recognize their outstanding passion for service, the Ohio recipient will receive an award of $1,500 to be donated to any eligible nonprofit of their choosing.

The selection for the Andrus Award recipient is based on the following criteria:
1. A brief description of the work that the nominated volunteer has contributed to their organization.
2. How has the nominee embodied the “purpose and vision” of AARP in their work?
3. How has the nominee enhanced their community and strengthened the voice of residents?
4. What is exceptional, innovative, and/or inspiring about the nominee’s contributions?
5. How has the nominee impacted other volunteers and/or urged others to volunteer?

Volunteers who provide service without pay or receive small stipends to cover costs associated with the volunteer activity are eligible for nomination.

AARP Ohio encourages you to nominate a volunteer that has lifted up your community, combatted stereotypes, and emphasized the changing power of service.

The submission deadline for nominations is July 31, 2020. Do not hesitate to nominate an admirable, 50+ volunteer that has impacted your life for the better!
