Rural settings are often seen as good places to grow old because of the abundance of friendly social support. For people on limited budgets, lower costs in rural areas can also be attractive.

But aging in rural areas comes with challenges around access to services and care that may be needed as we get older.

To help people better understand and prepare for the unique challenges facing caregivers in rural communities, AARP State Director Marguerite Ro sat down recently with Jennifer Lichorobiec of Aging and Long Term Care of Eastern Washington.

Jennifer’s agency covers five counties and a diverse population. The two discussed issues like the importance of family caregivers, and access to physicians, respite and rehabilitation supports. Plus challenges regarding transportation and affordable broadband services.
