New Help for Low-Income Tenants

Posted on 11/01/23 by AARP Bulletin

Certain low-income tenants in Delaware will be entitled to free legal representation in eviction proceedings and other landlord disputes under a new law supported by AARP Delaware and other groups.

Legal aid agencies will be the primary provider of representation under the measure, which Gov. John Carney (D) signed in July. The new law will also create a diversion program to help tenants who are behind on their rent avoid eviction through mediation and other steps.

“The lack of affordable housing options is a real problem for families, young people and especially older Delawareans,” says Sheila Grant, AARP Delaware’s advocacy director.
