New data shows clear-cut support for transit in Marion County
AARP survey details Indy’s staunch support for transit, transit expansion
In 2016, Marion County voters approved a referendum that paved the way for the expansion of bus rapid transit.
Five years later, an AARP survey finds that the county’s registered voters continue to staunchly support transit expansion, as well as the city’s public transportation agency, IndyGo.
“AARP Indiana fought hard for transit expansion,” Addison Pollock, AARP Indiana director of community engagement, said. “It is encouraging to see that voters continue to value safe, equitable, and accessible transportation for people of all ages.”
According to the 2021 AARP Marion County, Indiana Transit Survey, a staggering 87 percent of registered voters over the age of 18 believe that it is extremely or very important to have IndyGo available in Marion County. In fact, they rated the public transportation service as more important than taxi and ride share companies.

The survey also showed 88 percent of those registered voters support the wide-ranging set of infrastructure improvements that go hand in hand with the expansion of bus rapid transit – think sidewalk repairs, crosswalk improvements, bus stops, and more. Along with that, 74 percent of the surveyed voters supported dedicated bus lanes and level-boarding stops.
“IndyGo and its bus system provide millions of rides to Hoosiers across the county,” Pollock said. “AARP Indiana will continue to support public transit and help ensure that our older friends and neighbors can count on the bus to get to family, the grocery store, doctor’s appointments – anything they need.”
