New Administration Tells AARP Social Security Payments Are Protected

Posted on 02/13/25 by Laura McDonough

Few things are as deeply woven into the fabric of our nation as Social Security. For over eight decades, this bedrock program has offered economic security and dignity to millions of retirees, people with disabilities, and surviving spouses and children. It is a sacred promise between the government and the American people who pay in and earn their Social Security over a lifetime of hard work.

AARP knows that you work hard and pay into Social Security, so it's only fair for you to expect to get the money you've earned. The new administration has reassured AARP that Social Security payments will be protected amid potentially sweeping changes in how the federal government operates.

Today, 67 million people benefit from Social Security, including more than 156,000 people here in Vermont, that's nearly one in four Vermont residents. These payments inject more than $2.6 billion into Vermont’s economy every year. The largest group of beneficiaries in Vermont are its 113,550 retired workers, who account for 72.8 percent of all Social Security beneficiaries in the state.

AARP will continue to fight for and advocate on the issues that matter most to older Americans. Read more at our story with our Senior Vice President of Government Affairs.
