Michael Schuster: 2024 AARP Virginia Elvira B. Shaw Advocacy Award
Michael Schuster of Alexandria is a dedicated advocate for older Virginians, serving as chair of the Alexandria City Commission on Aging and the Eviction Prevention Committee for the Northern Virginia Aging Network (NVAN), as well as Housing Issue Lead for AARP Virginia's State Advocacy Team. In 2023, his efforts led to the introduction of House Bill 598 (evictions) and House Bill 894 (electronic meetings), along with two budget amendments, at the 2024 Virginia General Assembly.
In 2023, Schuster spearheaded a NVAN background paper on evictions and lobbied northern Virginia legislators to extend the grace period in non-payment eviction cases. He presented this issue at a NVAN event and secured Delegate Marcia Price's sponsorship for HB 598, which passed the House of Delegates.
Additionally, Schuster advocated for affordable assisted living, testifying before the Alexandria City Council and collaborating on proposals to increase funding. He pushed for electronic meeting accessibility, resulting in HB 894's passage, supported by AARP Virginia, enhancing public participation and transparency.

Shaw’s commitment to ensuring fair elections through her roles on the Virginia Board of Elections and the Colonial Heights Electoral Board exemplifies her dedication to democracy and the integrity of the electoral process.
Shaw's advocacy as a volunteer for AARP on behalf of the older Virginians showcased her compassion and commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable populations.
