Local Projects Improve Nebraska Communities

Posted on 09/30/23 by The AARP Bulletin

Six localities across the state have received 2023 AARP Community Challenge grants for quick-turnaround projects that will help make their areas more livable for residents of all ages.

This year’s projects are:

  • In the southern part of the state, the Fairbury Community Building will receive upgrades including an indoor walking track and devices for Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • In Chappell, in western Nebraska, a grant will pay for improvements to the Chappell Lake recreation area’s restrooms, picnic shelters and parking lot.
  • In Lincoln, the nonprofit Civic Nebraska will conduct three walk audits along a busy residential street to identify potential locations for traffic slowing tools.
  • In central Nebraska, the Seven Valleys Senior Center in Callaway will add Wi-Fi service, a desktop computer and a projector to offer greater online access.
  • The city of Omaha Planning Department will produce a how-to guidebook and website for adding an accessory dwelling unit on a residential lot. ADUs, such as in-law suites, can expand living options for older adults.
  • And in nearby Fremont, Habitat for Humanity will improve its community garden with raised beds and walkways.

All projects must be completed by Nov. 30. Learn more at aarp.org/communitychallenge.
