Livable Spaces Help Us Age Independently

Posted on 02/01/24 by Jeff Johnson

This February, we recognize National Senior Independence Month. At AARP, we strive to create spaces where people of all ages can live independent, fulfilled lives. We are here to act as a wise friend and fierce defender for the 50+, and we aim to help you and your families feel confident, in control and secure as you age.

AARP is committed to working with local leaders to improve Floridians’ quality of life by creating Livable Communities. We are proud to collaborate with municipalities across the state as they make immediate improvements in their communities to jumpstart long-term change, especially for Floridians 50+. Livable Communities supports the efforts of neighborhoods, towns, cities and rural areas to be great places for people of all ages. We believe that communities should provide safe, walkable streets; age-friendly housing and transportation options; access to needed services; and opportunities for residents of all ages to participate in community life.

Creating a more livable space allows residents to focus on personal fulfillment. Personal fulfillment can be a multifaceted journey that involves embracing one's passions, fostering meaningful connections, and continuing to learn and grow. Whether it's delving into long-lost hobbies, engaging in community activities, or spending quality time with loved ones, older Floridians can find immense joy in the pursuit of their interests.

Recently, AARP opened up the application process for the 2024 Community Challenge Grants. Community Challenge grants fund quick-action projects that help communities become more livable by improving public places, transportation, housing, digital connections and more. AARP Florida works in collaboration with communities across the state, bringing people together, and providing resources and expertise to help make Florida’s counties, towns and cities great places to live for people of all ages.

In 2023, eight organizations in Florida were awarded Community Challenge grants. Grantees have improved public spaces, addressed housing and transportation needs, created community gardens, and other opportunities for civic engagement.

By creating livable spaces, we empower older adults to live independently as they age. We aim to create a society where aging is a journey marked by continued growth, fulfillment and well-being. As society continues to evolve, supporting the autonomy of our aging population is a crucial step toward creating inclusive communities that honor the wisdom and contributions of every generation.
