Las Cruces AARP Community Events -- November and December

Volunteers Needed -- to help work with planning interactive activities with elementary school special education students. The Chapter would like to restart a program working in the schools once a month in providing these activities. If interested please attend the Nov. 20th Chapter meeting. Details are below.

AARP Las Cruces Chapter Meeting, Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2 p.m. – This month’s program will be by Dr. Michael Fredrick discussing palliative medicine. Palliative care has its own distinct mission: to relieve suffering and improve quality of life for people with serious illnesses. It doesn't serve only the dying. Instead, it focuses more broadly on improving life and providing comfort to people of all ages. The Chapter meets at Senior Amigos, 3948 E Lohman.

AARP’s Movies for Grownups, Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. -- AARP will be sponsoring a free screening of the movie “Midway” in appreciation of all our veterans at the Cineport 10 in Mesilla Valley Mall. The movie centers on the Battle of Midway, a clash between the American fleet and the Imperial Japanese Navy which marked a pivotal turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. To register visit https://aarp.cvent.com/MIDWAY_LasCruces Registration does not guarantee you a seat as seating is on a first come, first served basis so please plan to arrive early. Another Movies for Grownups is set for December and will be “Won't you be my neighbor”, the story of Mr. Rodgers, played by Tom Hanks. Registration information will be coming soon.

AARP Information Tables: The Chapter will have an information table at the Farmer's Market downtown on
Saturdays, Dec. 14 and Jan. 4th, from 8 am until 12 p.m. Information provided include topics such as fraud prevention, caregiving resources and the basics of Medicare.

Chapter Meeting and Holiday Celebration, Wednesday, Dec. 18 – The program will be a great party featuring the “Cactus Chords”, a men’s quartet. The group entered the NM Senior Olympics Talent Show and won First Place and then went to the State Games and won First place in 2018 and again in 2019. The Chapter’s Board of Directors will provide home-made desserts, coffee and hot chocolate.

Driver Safety

Refresh your driving skills with the AARP Driver Safety Course. Learn defensive driving techniques, proven safety strategies, new traffic laws and rules of the road. No tests to pass! Upon completion you will receive a multi-year discount on your auto insurance premium. Classes are $15 for AARP members and $20 non-members. Cash or check must be provided for payment at the start of class. Credit cards are not accepted.
