Las Cruces AARP Chapter Serves Up Some Good Food for Local Veterans
In what is becoming a tradition, AARP Las Cruces Chapter members are honoring local veterans with a special dinner for the fifth year in a row.
Chapter members, in conjunction with AARP New Mexico and El Caldito Kitchen, served over 100 veterans and their guests with a chicken dinner on Flag Day, June 14th.
Fifteen Chapter members worked over seven hours to cook the food, serve the meals, and clean up after the event.
“It is a lot of work to put something like this together but our volunteers were up for the task,” said Abel Chavarria, chapter volunteer and coordinator of the event. “It’s very rewarding to be able to help our veterans and do something for them.”
AARP Las Cruces Chapter President Irene Lewis was pleased with the results.
“This was the best and most attended dinner we have ever hosted,” Lewis said.
The chapter also furnished a table with information for veterans. AARP has a number or resources for veterans that can be found on its website at www.aarp.org/veterans
