Las Cruces AARP Chapter Plays Cupid on Valentine’s Day

The Las Cruces AARP Chapter spent Valentine’s Day delivering 500 roses to nine nursing facilities in the Las Cruces area.

The event was to help lessen the impact of social isolation on Valentine’s Day, Wish of a Lifetime from AARP’s 10th annual Cupid Crew hand delivered over 100,000 roses to older adults across the country.

In Las Cruces, 10 volunteers helped deliver the roses, which were met with smiles and thank yous.  Where possible, the roses, along with a Valentines Day card, were given to residents during their lunch time.

“This was a rewarding way to spend the afternoon,” said volunteer Linda Moudy, who along with volunteer Lisa Carlson, delivered roses to two of the dementia-related homes.

Volunteer Eileen Rosenblatt, who organized and led the event, was able to provide roses to two of the Chapter’s former members.

AARP New Mexico staff and volunteers delivered 1,300 roses and Valentine’s cards to area nursing home residents in Santa Fe and senior centers in Albuquerque, as well as Las Cruces.

“AARP New Mexico was pleased and excited to be part of this year’s Cupid Crew,” said Gary Williams, AARP New Mexico Associate State Director for Community Outreach. “We want to make sure that older adults are being remembered this Valentine’s Day and are included in part of the fun. Sometimes a small gesture and just being thought of can really brighten someone’s day.”

“I want to thank the Las Cruces Chapter for being part of the Cupid Crew and working hard to bring people a little extra love on Valentine’s Day,” Williams said.

Since the pandemic's start, many older Americans have become more isolated, missing out on chances to connect with their communities and passions in life. With Cupid Crew, Wish of a Lifetime is empowering communities nationwide to help isolated older adults feel more connected and loved.

“For a decade, Cupid Crew has uplifted and spread love to more than half a million older adults at risk of social isolation on a holiday that is all about community and appreciating those who shine a light in your life,” said Tom Wagenlander, vice president and executive director, Wish of a Lifetime from AARP.
