Las Cruces AARP Chapter Conducts Baby Shower
Oddly enough the Las Cruces AARP Chapter 1230 recently held a baby shower, modifying its target population from the over 50 set to infants and babies up to 12 months old.
A couple of months ago, Chapter member Mary Ann Lufkin suggested a baby shower to obtain donations for CareNet, in need of diapers, clothing, and other infant needs for struggling moms. CareNet is a pregnancy center in Las Cruces that helps women, especially first time pregnancies, through their pregnancies.
The chapter regularly requests donations of dry foods from members attending their general meetings. This food is then donated to local charities in Las Cruces. Many charities throughout the city are in need to fill food pantries and to have available food for local homeless and low-income individuals. This work enables the members to have an easy way to give back to the community through their donations.
However, as a result of the suggestion to have a baby shower, the Chapter Board decided to look at different donation possibilities for a specific month. At the April meeting, for example, it has been decided that participants would be asked to collect pet food to donate to a local shelter.
After the scheduled presentation and closing of the regular meeting, Lufkin facilitated the baby shower. Several games were enjoyed by participants- matching names of baby animals to the name of the adult animal, and fill-in-the-blanks on wording of nursery rhymes were two games enjoyed by all.
“We had a lot of fun with the games and refreshments for the baby shower,” Lufkin said. “The generous donations will be much appreciated by CareNet.”
The Chapter’s meeting are free and open to the general public. Meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month, 2 p.m., at Senior Amigos, Roadrunner and East Lohman, behind Walgreen’s. For more information or to volunteer with the chapter, email Dave at dlynchio@hotmail.com.
