    SEPTEMBER

    Social Security Lounge & Learns | September
    Understanding the key building blocks of retirement is necessary to retirement planning. AARP North Dakota is offering in-person Social Security sessions in two locations in September. A speaker from the Bismarck office of the Social Security Administration will help people nearing retirement get the most out of Social Security in retirement.  There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.

    Missing Middle Housing Forums - Bismarck and West Fargo | September 27 & 28
    Join community leaders and developers in Bismarck and West Fargo to discuss how to expand the housing options in these two growing cities in a way that that benefits everyone. We'll explore the advantages and components of a concept called Missing Middle Housing — digging into diverse housing options that support walkability, locally-servicing retail, and public transportation options.     Mosaic Art Classes in Bismarck | Tuesday, Oct. 10
    Making art increases focus, lowers stress, and creates joy. Tap into all those positives by joining us for a mosaic art class with instruction provided by artist Molly McLain. You'll create your own colorful mosaic to take home. No charge to attend. Materials and refreshments will be provided. Register for one of the classes today!

    Collage Art Classes in Grand Forks | Thursday, Oct. 12
    Gain a greater understanding of the elements of design including line, shape, texture, space and color during this two-hour class led by North Dakota Museum of Art Executive Director Mathew Wallace. You'll incorporate each element of design to create your own collage to take home. No charge for materials or to attend. Refreshments provided. Register for one of the classes today!

    Volunteer Recognition Events in Bismarck and Fargo | Oct. 24 & 25
    Whether you're a new or long-time AARP volunteer, or if you aspire to volunteer with AARP, we invite you to join us for one of the upcoming Volunteer Recognition events in either Bismarck or Fargo. We'll provide updates, some training and wrap up the event by recognizing volunteers during the awards luncheon. We're eager to announce the 2023 Andrus Award for Community Service nominees and name the recipient. No charge to attend. Lunch will be provided.

    AARP North Dakota is a proud sponsor of the Summit and of the Red River Rainbow Seniors & Missouri River Rainbow Senior Seniors Social on Saturday, Oct. 21. Registration for that event coming soon.

    AARP ND YOGA SERIES 2023-24
    This fall we're bringing back our popular online yoga series! Local yoga teacher Sigrid Strebe will again be our guide to greater strength and flexibility while providing options for every body and ability. Each 45-minute class will take place on a Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. online. Yoga blocks, a bolster, a strap and a chair can be useful but are not required. Registration links coming soon.

      Fear of falling is a real concern as we age. As you age you may notice changes happening that affect your balance: vision, loss of muscle strength and joint pain or joint replacements. Learn ways to improve balance and range of motion and feel steadier on your feet and more confident as you move through life.

      Have you been alarmed at the slump in your shoulders? Have the upper shelves at the grocery store become a stretch too far? Does a painfully stiff neck account for your straight-ahead view of the world? Rotate, stretch and build strength in this 45 minute class.
    • January 10, 2024 | Strength and Stretch Yoga: Counteract Sitting
      Whether you’re still working from home, spending a little too much time in front of the television or life has just slowed down, do you feel like you’re sitting too much? Have you noticed after long spells of being static you’re stiff? Find movement and a few tools to help counteract the effects of too much sitting in this 45 minute class.

      Did you know you can start yoga at any age and touching your toes is not a requirement to get on the mat? Are you looking for ways to stay active and keep moving to improve mental and physical health? This easy, slower moving yoga class may be just what you’ve been looking for.
    • February 7, 2024 | Strength and Stretch Yoga: Hip Mobility and Strengthening
      Yoga to support the hips is the second most requested class in yoga, right after back pain. Discomfort and/or limited mobility become more common as we take more trips around the sun. Learn gentle ways to keep those hips moving and also build strength.
    • February 21, 2024 | Strength and Stretch Yoga: Easing Back Pain
      Many people think of yoga as just a good way to relieve stress and tension, but it can also help you reduce back pain and maintain a healthy spine. If you’re looking to stay active as you age, learning to find movement and strength is important.

    Tele-Town Hall with ND Securities Commissioner Karen Tyler | Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 9:30 a.m.
    Take part in this call-in town hall meeting, in which ND Securities Commissioner Karen Tyler will discuss new protections in place to protect vulnerable North Dakotans from investment fraud, in particular the Restitution Assistance Fund which went into affect July 1.     Tele-Townhall with Kate Kleinert and Paul Greenwood | Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 9:30 a.m.
    Scammers steal tens of billions of dollars a year, and among their hardest hit victims are older adults. Many are left penniless, bewildered and alone, yet don’t report the crime out of embarrassment, or they try but are turned away from law enforcement. Join us for a candid conversation with romance scam victim Kate Kleinert about the true emotional and physical toll of experiencing fraud, as well as why we should (and can) do more to investigate and prosecute fraud criminals.     Tele-Townhall with North Dakota Attorney General | Friday, Dec. 15 at 9:30 a.m.
    Take part in this call-in town hall meeting addressing the latest frauds and scams and ways to identify and report scams in North Dakota. Parrell Grossman, ND Assistant Attorney General and Director, Consumer Protection & Antitrust Division; and Marina Spahr, ND Assistant Attorney General and Director of the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit will be featured on the call.
