Thayra “Tye” Hausheer came to the United States from Panama at age 19, joined the U.S. Air Force and served for four years in Idaho. It was there that she first became passionate about community activism, serving on the Idaho Women’s Network advisory board and as President of the statewide organization, Mujeres Unidas de Idaho.

Today, Tye is a Volunteer Leader for AARP and a bilingual member of AARP’s South Florida Speakers Bureau. In her roles as an AARP volunteer, Tye gives community presentations around topics that are important to the 50+ population such as caregiving, Medicare, Social Security and brain health. She often serves as an AARP spokesperson, doing local radio interviews in both English and Spanish and speaking on guest panels with other community organizations. Tye is also a Volunteer Leader for SHINE (Alliance for Aging); she is a volunteer for VITAS in the Bereavement Department, a member of the Latino Center on Aging advisory board, a certified instructor for the Florida Health Networks and the Alliance for Aging, and Engagement Coordinator for Mission United.

“Volunteerism is an addiction, but a good addiction for me,” Tye said. “[It] makes me feel great being an agent of positive change in my community.”

Join Tye and other AARP South Florida volunteers to make a difference and fight for issues that matter to older Floridians and their loved ones. You will make connections with other passionate volunteers and find fellowship with people in your community.
