Highlighting Lehigh Valley

Join Lehigh Valley Volunteer Group: Your Community, Your Pace, Your Passion

Posted on 01/21/21 by Kellie VonStein

At AARP Pennsylvania, we are fortunate to work with an amazing group of volunteers who bring their passion, expertise, and love for the Lehigh Valley area to support their community. Though our volunteers come to us from different careers and backgrounds, they have one thing in common – our volunteers find value in giving back to the community through AARP. Despite leading busy lives with family, friends, faith organizations and helping others through other volunteer opportunities, time and again we have heard from our volunteers that AARP gives them an avenue to give back to their community in many different ways and allows them to choose volunteer opportunities that work best for them.

Our volunteers have written thousands of letters to veterans and nursing home residents to let them know we were thinking of them. We have advocated for legislation that protects vulnerable populations, and we have helped educate older Pennsylvanians on how to stay safe through the pandemic.

While our volunteers do the serious work to make a difference in the lives of older Pennsylvanians, particularly right here in the Lehigh Valley Area, we also know how to have fun! We have hosted debate watch parties, game nights, happy hours, and exercise classes.

We would love to have you become a part of our AARP Lehigh Valley volunteer family! Please consider the following volunteer opportunities and click here to indicate your interest.

Volunteer Opportunities

Community Outreach/Table Events* – Do you like meeting new people?  Lehigh Valley volunteers represent AARP at legislative fairs, IronPigs games, and several other fairs and festivals across the Lehigh Valley.

“Because AARP is such a large and diverse organization, volunteering for AARP gives me the opportunity to meet many people. ‘Volunteer’ means to offer your services freely; for me, it means to give back and hopefully touch someone’s life with education and support -- also a smile!”
Judy, AARP Lehigh Valley Volunteer

Advocacy/Legislative Visits – If you are passionate about advocating for issues that matter most to the 50+ and their families, our volunteers make their voices heard with representatives at the state and federal level.  Whether it is making calls, visits to their local legislators, or heading to the Capitol for Lobby Day, advocacy volunteers are key in protecting 50+ Pennsylvanians on important issues.

“I enjoy making my community stronger by advocating to my local, state and federal legislators on issues such as lowering prescription drug prices. Most of all, volunteering gives me a purpose in my retirement years, and I make great new friends and have fun!
- Mary Jane, AARP Lehigh Valley Regional Lead

Service Projects/Food Packing* – For a hands-on community service experience, consider joining our Lehigh Valley volunteers as we work with local organizations to pack senior boxes on a monthly basis.

Public Speaking/Presentations – Educating the 50+ community is so important to AARP and we can always use volunteers to help us!  We will provide you the tools you need to present on topics that interest you such as fraud and consumer protection, caregiving, and veteran issues.

“Since retiring and volunteering with AARP, I have found a worthwhile use of my time helping to improve the lives of older people. It gives me satisfaction to know that I am part of a well-know organization that has many programs that can make a difference for the 50-plus population.”
- Ron, AARP Advocacy and Veteran Team Lead

Virtual Volunteering via Computer/Letter Writing – Did you know that AARP Lehigh Valley volunteers wrote over 3,000 cards to veterans and nursing home residents in 2020? This was a great at-home project for our volunteers and brought joy to those who may have felt isolated during the pandemic.

“I love spreading the word of the work AARP is doing to benefit older Pennsylvanians, and interacting with all types of people.”
- Ro, AARP Lehigh Valley County Coordinator

Fun Events – AARP Lehigh Valley volunteers know how to have fun!  Our volunteers host and enjoy ice cream socials, happy hours, virtual game nights and more!

“When I retired I was looking to do something meaningful and purposeful and I found that with volunteering for AARP, I could do just that. We do so many fun things that constantly keep me growing and changing and proving to myself there are still things out there for me to do. For instance, I host an exercise class every Monday on Zoom called Moving with Milly. I get to share my passion for exercising with others. But moreover I feel like I gained a family with AARP.
- Milly, AARP Lehigh Valley Volunteer
