‘Somos…Nuestras Historias’ Movie Series: Coco ( Oct. 4 – Oct. 6 | Virtual)
We invite you to watch the first film in AARP California’s “Somos…Nuestras Historias” Movie Series celebrating the far-reaching and lasting influence of Hispanic culture in America and around the world. The premiere offering is the 2017 hit film, Coco, a tale about a boy named Miguel who dreams of becoming a famous guitar player despite the misgivings of his close-knit family. Learn more HERE. How Does Ranked-Choice Voting Work in in Alameda County? (Oct. 7 @ 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. | Virtual)
Join AARP California and the League of Women Voters of Oakland for a presentation on ranked- choice voting in Alameda County. You will gain a better understanding of the ballot’s format. City of Oakland Mobility & Transportation Resources (Oct. 9 @ 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. | Virtual)
Learn about available transportation resources and what the City of Oakland, Easy Does It Emergency Services, United Seniors of Oakland, and Alameda County are doing to support older adults and persons with disabilities with mobility. Movie Screening: ‘Miss Angela’(Oct. 12-14 | Virtual)
Enjoy a free screening of the 2020 film Miss Angela, an event AARP California is hosting as part of the "Somos…Nuestras Historias" movie series celebrating Hispanic and Latino cultures. Miss Angela tells the remarkable story of 91-year-old Cuban-American singer-songwriter Angela Alvarez, whose songs were nearly lost to the world. End of Life Discussions with Lily and Sandy (Oct. 29 @ 12 p.m. – 1p.m.| Virtual)
Join us for a conversation with Sandy Chen Stokes, Executive director of the Chinese American Coalition for Compassionate Care, and Lily Liu, an AARP California volunteer with lived experience as a family caregiver. Sandy and Lily will talk about the challenges of discussing end of life and death, the role Asian culture and language plays, and how to get the conversation started. How Does Ranked Choice Voting Work? (Oct. 30 @ 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. | San Francisco City Hall)
Join AARP California and the San Francisco Department of Elections’ outreach team for a presentation on ranked-choice voting (RCV) at San Francisco City Hall. The method, in which voters list candidates in order of preference, has been gaining ground in recent years. You’ll get an overview of RCV, including RCV ballot practices, and general information on voting options for the November 2024 election. Learn more HERE.
