A Screening of “Year of the Rat” & Romance Scams – Protect Yourself & Your Heart (February 7 @ Noon – 1 p.m. PT | Virtual)
Join us for a virtual screening of “Year of the Rat,” a short film about a woman trying online dating for the first time who meets a man who isn’t what he pretends to be. We’ll also hear from director Ricky Qi and get tips from fraud prevention expert Jason Collom on the dangers of online romance scams and how you can protect yourself. Learn more and register HERE. News Literacy Project: Explore Tools to Help You better Evaluate the News (February 8 @ Noon – 1 p.m. PT | Virtual)
Join us and the News Literacy Project (NLP) for a discussion of the NLP’s free public resource, RumorGuard, a tool that can help consumers become savvier and more critical when examining their news and media feeds. NLP’s senior manager of education design, Dan Evon, will walk us through five key factors considered in evaluating news, such as source and context. We’ll also cover evaluation techniques. Downsize & Declutter with Kris (February 23 @ Noon – 1 p.m. PT | Virtual)
Join AARP California volunteer, Kris Hollstrom, for an engaging, online presentation on decluttering and downsizing. Explore why holding on to "stuff" is so important to some people and learn practical tips on how to declutter and downsize successfully. For example, effective strategies include resolving to avoid punting, figuring out what to donate and what to keep, and involving everyone in the home in the project. Learn more and register HERE. Let’s Take it Outside: Explore Yerba Buena Park (February 26 @ 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. PT | San Francisco, CA)
Join us for a leisurely and inspiring outing at Yerba Buena Gardens, located in the cultural heart of San Francisco. With a blend of public space and cultural amenities, Yerba Buena Gardens is considered one of California’s preeminent public spaces in an urban area. It features landscaped lawns, public art, and award-winning architecture. The visit will include a visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, featuring a waterfall and glass panels that highlight Dr. King’s enduring words, poems, and images from the civil rights movement. Join us to learn about the gardens and explore the grounds with a small group. Wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers are welcome. Learn more and register HERE. AARP Community Challenge Grant
AARP invites you to submit applications for tangible improvement projects that can help YOUR community become more livable for all residents, especially those 50 and older. Applications are being accepted through March 6, 2024, 5:00 p.m. ET  / 2:00 p.m. PT for grants to improve public places; housing; transportation; community resilience; digital connections; and community health and economic empowerment across three funding opportunities – Flagship Grants, Demonstration Grants and Capacity-Building Microgrants. Since 2017, AARP has invested $16.4 million through 1,370 projects across all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
