AARP California invites you to a special Movies for Grownups screening of Eat Drink Man Woman. Eat Drink Man Woman is a classic 1994 comedy-drama film directed by Ang Lee about a semi-retired chef and widower Zhu and his relationship with his three daughters. AARP California invites you to a special Movies for Grownups screening of ULAM: MAIN DISH. In this delicious documentary, Filipino-American filmmaker Alexandra Cuerdo follows the rise of Filipino food through the voices of the chefs bringing it to American tables. ULAM: MAIN DISH stages this new culinary movement as not only a remarkable achievement for American restaurateurs, but also as a validation of Filipino culture. AARP California invites you to a special Movies for Grownups screening of JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI. The film profiles acclaimed sushi chef Jiro Ono and delves into the octogenarian’s life, including his difficult childhood and his early days in the restaurant business. It also examines the techniques and philosophies he employs in putting together dishes. A Guided Tour of the USS Hornet (August 27 @ 10 a.m. PT | Alameda)
Join us for a free, guided tour of the USS Hornet, a historic aircraft carrier that hosted the first space shuttle mission. Senior Safari: Enjoy a Day at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (August 22 @ 9 a.m. PT | San Jose)
Join us at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo’s Senior Safari series and enjoy a day at the zoo. This program is designed to help older adults improve their health, avoid social isolation, and enjoy a unique environment that stimulates both mind and body. Senior Safari admission and parking are free for those ages 50-plus that arrive before 10 a.m. PT (the park opens to seniors at 9 a.m. PT), and guests are welcome to stay for the day after gates open to the public. Nominate a Volunteer for the AARP Andrus Award for Community Service
Do you know an extraordinary volunteer age 50 or older who deserves recognition? AARP California is seeking nominations for the 2024 Andrus Award for Community Service. This is the association's most prestigious volunteer award that recognizes outstanding individuals who are sharing their experience, talents, and skills to enrich the lives of others. It is presented annually to a California volunteer, age 50 or older, that embodies the principles of AARP’s founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, who believed in the power of ordinary people to do extraordinary things. California’s 2024 Andrus Award for Community Service recipient will be presented with the award and a $1,000 check made out to the non-profit of their choice. Review the eligibility guidelines and submit your online nomination HERE. The deadline for the California Andrus Awards for Community Service nominations is August 15, 2024. Please note, other states may have different deadlines.
