Iowa Nursing Homes Need Better Staffing, Visitation Options

Posted on 11/30/20 by The AARP Bulletin

AARP Iowa is calling on the state to form a task force to better protect and support residents and workers in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities across the state.

Nursing home residents have accounted for more than half of COVID-19-related deaths in Iowa.

Shortages of staffing and personal protective equipment (PPE) continue to be reported in these facilities. And cold temperatures create another obstacle to safe in-person family visits.

AARP Iowa is urging the state to develop a plan that:

  • Addresses the shortage of essential staff;
  • Closes gaps in access to PPE for residents, staff and all visitors;
  • Ensures that all facilities are providing virtual visitation to families and residents.
