On July 7, 2019, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned North Floridians to begin planning for a possible tropical weather system to develop in the northern Gulf of Mexico in coming days.

The NHC warning – coming two months before tropical weather systems historically target the northern Gulf – may herald an active 2019 tropical weather season.

The 2019 hurricane season is no longer theoretical. It’s here. Now is the time for people all across Florida, from Key West to Pensacola, to prepare.

AARP Florida is here to help with comprehensive preparation information, geared for Floridians age 50-plus. We have assembled information on how to prepare if you plan to shelter at home, how to prepare to evacuate, how to check your insurance policy, how to avoid fraud in repairing storm damage and a host of other topics.

Got additional tips on disaster preparation that has worked for you? Email flaarp@aarp.org or call 1-866-595-7678.

Florida's Assignment of Benefits Law Updated to Better Protect Consumers. The rules have changed on how you can get your home repaired after a hurricane or other natural disaster by letting a contractor deal directly with your insurance company. Know your rights when hiring a contractor.

Prepare When It's Sunny Outside. For Floridians preparing for hurricanes, one fundamental question is whether you will evacuate or attempt to ride the storm out. But you should recognize that if you don’t prepare in advance to evacuate, you may delay making a decision until it’s too late to flee the storm. We got a downloadable checklist.

Remember to Plan For Fallen Trees. If a falling limb or tree smashes a fence or a deck, your insurance policy may not cover it. You may have to pay for tree removal services out of your own pocket – as well as repairs for the smashed property. Look at your policy now and other tips.
