Honoring Commissioner Angela Conley during Black History Month
AARP MN is proud to honor Hennepin County Commissioner, Angela Conley, during Black History Month. Her dedication and work on issues of livability, housing, equity and inclusion, community services, and civic engagement shows her commitment to a better quality of life in the South Minneapolis community. Conley has spoken at Sabathani and Nokomis AARP Healthy Aging events to join our elders and speak on her work on their behalf.
In 2018, Conley was the first elected African American to serve on the Hennepin County’s Board, and now holds her position on District 4. She grew up in South Minneapolis, which is the community that she currently represents. Prior to being elected, she worked in human services at the state and county level for 20 years. Now, she serves on the Adult Mental Health Local Advisory Council and strives to form the Hennepin County Racial Equity Advisory Council, which would be the first of its kind. After the Hennepin County budget proposed to eliminate all funding to programs providing home and community-based services to elders in need, she co-authored a budget amendment to reinstate half of the funding and it passed unanimously. Safe transit, accessible housing and racial equity are some of the main areas Conley plans to make an impact on while representing District 4.
