Honor MLK Day in Columbia, SC: Three Powerful Films, One Inspiring Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a time to reflect on the struggle for justice, honor the leaders who risked everything to expand civil rights, and recommit to building communities where everyone can thrive. Dr. King’s vision of equality, dignity and opportunity for all continues to guide conversations about fairness and democracy today.
AARP South Carolina is hosting an MLK Day film series to create space for learning, reflection and dialogue about our shared history. By bringing people together to watch and discuss these important stories, we hope to deepen understanding and highlight the ongoing work needed to advance equity for people and communities of every age.
MLK Day Film Series at the Nickelodeon Theater
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, AARP South Carolina will present three free film screenings at the Nickelodeon Theater on Main Street in Columbia:
- Rosenwald – 11:00 a.m.
- Selma – 1:15 p.m.
- Hidden Figures – 1:45 p.m.
All screenings are FREE, but registration is required. Anyone 18 and older is welcome to attend, and AARP membership is not required. All films will be shown at the Nickelodeon Theater on Main Street in Columbia, South Carolina. Seating is first come, first served, so please arrive early.

Rosenwald – 11:00 a.m.
Documentary
Discover the story of Julius Rosenwald, a business leader and philanthropist who partnered with Black communities across the rural South to help build thousands of schools during the Jim Crow era. Rosenwald highlights the power of collaboration, education and community leadership in expanding opportunity for generations of students. This inspiring documentary connects past efforts for equity to the ongoing work for civil rights today.

Selma – 1:15 p.m.
Drama / Historical
Experience the powerful story behind the 1965 voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and local activists. Selma brings to life the risks, sacrifices and moral courage of ordinary people who stood up to secure the right to vote. The film invites us to reflect on the meaning of democracy, civic participation and the ongoing importance of protecting voting rights.

Hidden Figures – 1:45 p.m.
Drama / Historical
Follow the true stories of three brilliant Black women mathematicians at NASA whose calculations helped launch America’s early space missions. Hidden Figures shines a light on courage, excellence and determination in the face of discrimination, both in the workplace and in society. The film is an uplifting reminder that talent is universal, even when opportunity is not—and that progress often depends on people whose contributions have gone unrecognized.
