Hit the Hiking Trail While Supporting Vets
AARP in St. Louis’ Trail Trekkers will host its third annual Veterans Day hike in November.
The roughly three-mile walk along a paved trail will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Jefferson Barracks Park, at 345 North Road. Most people should be able to complete the route in about an hour. Participants will meet at the park’s Gold Star Pavilion.
Hikers are asked to bring nonperishable food items or toiletries to donate to the Jefferson Barracks Food Pantry, which aids veterans, active-duty service members and their families.
“Collecting items of need for the pantry is one small way AARP members and others can show their appreciation for those that have served in the armed forces,” said Sheila Holm, AARP in St. Louis community outreach director.
Veterans and active-duty military members who participate in the hike will receive a Thank You for Your Service gift.
People who want to donate to the food bank but skip the hike can drop off items at the pavilion between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m.
The pantry is most in need of canned meats, like ham and chicken; peanut butter; diapers and other baby supplies; cleaning products; and toiletries, such as toothpaste and shampoo.
