Hit the Hiking Trail for Stunning Views
Hiking season in Arizona is back! (OK, the truth is, it’s almost always hiking season in Arizona, so let’s just say that it’s kicking into high gear.)
On Sunday, May 19, avid hiker and AARP volunteer Rick Eastman, 49, will lead a trek up Holbert Trail at South Mountain, 10919 S. Central Ave., in Phoenix.
Holbert Trail hikers are treated to a panorama of wildflowers, petroglyphs and a captivating view of the Phoenix Valley.
Hikers will gather at 7 a.m. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed. Restrooms and parking are at the trailhead. As always, bring water.
Holbert is considered a moderate to difficult hike, but this group will do only about half the route (roughly four miles round trip) to accommodate newbies.
The event is free and open to AARP members and nonmembers. Register at aarp.cvent.com/HikewithUs or call 877-926-8300.
This is one of many Phoenix in Motion events hosted year-round by AARP Arizona that are geared toward the 50-plus community.
Other types of activities include bike safety clinics, walks, concerts and training sessions for runners.
Hikes are held every other month. First-timer? No worries. The motto of the outings: “No one gets left behind.”
