The important contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the nation’s arts, music, culture and history are celebrated each year during Hispanic Heritage Month, which stretches from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. This also is an opportunity to showcase the impact that families from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean and South and Central America have on the economy and the future.

With AARP.org/cercadeti, there are numerous ways to participate in free, fun and informative virtual events in communities across the country during Hispanic Heritage Month - and all year.

You could kick off the month with the AARP Austin team’s screening of the movie “Selena,” a biopic about the “Queen of Tejano Music” starring Jennifer Lopez. Join the Boise team for a month of free events and movies, including “Cantinflas.” Or catch AARP New York’s free screening/talkback for the film “Decade of Fire,” which includes an opportunity to hear from the director, producer and main character.

Volunteers and staff in Texas have scheduled an entire month full of online Hispanic Heritage Month events featuring stories, art, food and music from Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala and Mexico.

You could explore ways to emerge stronger together from the pandemic through stories shared on AARP’s En Vivo Contigo Facebook Live events, hosted by comedian Jesus Trejo. And we invite you to share your stories about your personal experiences and Hispanic heritage.

AARP is collaborating with StoryCorps on a virtual audio story collection effort, “Vivan Las Voces” or “Long Live the Voices.” Recorded conversations between family members would be a great gift for your families, and can preserve important stories and the legacies of loved ones.

As a nation and as a community, we are “entrelazados” or “woven together.” Nuestra Latinidad nos conecta. Celebrate and connect with your community and with AARP near you.
