Grants Fund Improvements in Two Kansas Communities

Posted on 11/30/20 by The AARP Bulletin

AARP awarded 2020 Community Challenge grants to two cities to help make public transit more accessible for older adults and to encourage Kansas residents to fix up their porches as a way to improve their neighborhoods.

In Lawrence, city leaders will build bus stops with benches at busy intersections where there is a high density of older residents. The bus stops will be weatherproof, comfortable and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

In Coffeyville, a city of 9,200 people in the southeastern corner of the state, the funding will go to the AARP Porchology project, through which four houses will have their dilapidated porches repaired and spruced up.

Slated to be completed this month, the projects are part of AARP’s Livable Communities initiative. It supports the efforts of neighborhoods, towns, cities and rural areas to be great places for people of all ages.
