Grandparents Day is a special occasion dedicated to honoring the love, wisdom, and unwavering support of grandparents. This day allows families to express their gratitude and appreciation for the invaluable role grandparents play in their loved ones' lives.

The spacious and inviting Rose Garden Room provided guests with spectacular views of the waterway and rose gardens. Attendees were treated to speakers and entertainment provided by Tidewater Arts Outreach. Entertainment included face painting and coloring for the youngsters and young at heart to catchy tunes provided by Richard Mekdeci. Sandy from “Blessing with Sandy” taught families how to create beautiful greeting cards to take home. AARP partner organizations with booths gave attendees information on services available in the community.

Ebony Johnson, of Washington D.C., drove to Hampton Roads to enjoy the day with her mother, Theresa, as they celebrated Theresa’s first grandchild, Kayson.

“It has been an incredible day.” Theresa said. “Everyone has been friendly and made us feel like family.”

Kim Jones, of Portsmouth, said this was her first time at the Botanical Gardens and “it was good to see families spending time together.”

Philisa Johnson, AARP Virginia associate state director for community outreach for the southeast region, emphasized the important role of AARP volunteers.

“It is the volunteers that drive the service of this great organization,” she said.
