To recognize their integral work to support family caregivers in New Hampshire, AARP names Governor Chris Sununu, Senator Sharon Carson and Representative Janet Wall as 2017 Capitol Caregivers, joining a bipartisan group of nearly 100 elected officials from more than 30 states.  These leaders have advanced policies to support New Hampshire’s family caregivers who help their parents, spouses and other loved ones live independently at home and in the community – where they want to be.

“AARP thanks Governor Sununu, Senator Carson and Representative Wall for championing the Uniform Power of Attorney Act in 2017,” said AARP New Hampshire State Director Todd Fahey.  AARP New Hampshire serves more than 230,000 members age 50 and over in New Hampshire.

The Uniform Power of Attorney Act – SB 230 – ensures power of attorney laws provide family caregivers with the tools they need to make important financial decisions and helps protect individuals.

“Governor Sununu was also instrumental in passing rate increases for important home- and community-based services,” said Fahey.  “These services will help maintain vital services that allow aging Granite Staters and those with disabilities to stay home and age in their communities.” According to a 2015 AARP survey – Voices of 50+ New Hampshire -- being able to stay in their own homes as they age is important to 95% of New Hampshire residents age 50 and older.

Nearly 173,000 family caregivers in New Hampshire provide care valued at about $2 billion annually.  They help with bathing and dressing, preparing meals, managing finances, grocery shopping, transportation and more.  “These family caregivers provide invaluable care to their loved ones,” added Fahey.  “And they need our continue support to continue doing this great uncompensated work.”
