Get Moving with the AARP Austin Walking Program

Posted on 01/11/23 by Noah Luna-Rodriguez

On January 12, AARP Texas is holding a virtual information meeting for anyone wanting to train for the upcoming 43rd annual CAP10k. We're assembling a team to walk the course, and we want you to join us. The CAP10k is Texas' largest 10k race and Austin's oldest race. The actual race will take place on Sunday, April 16.

During the January 12 meeting, we will give you details about the walk training program, the training course, and anything else. This program will be both in-person and virtual. It is designed to provide information on nutrition, hydration, strong posture, and much more. The 12-week course will also prepare you mentally and physically to accomplish the 10k safely and wholeheartedly.

"In a livable community, people of all ages can go for a walk, cross the streets, ride a bike, and get around without a car," said AARP Texas Senior Associate State Director of Outreach & Advocacy Jessica Lemann. "This event is also important because people can live safely and comfortably, work or volunteer, enjoy public places, socialize, spend time outdoors, find the services they need—and make their city, town or neighborhood a lifelong home."

Lemann said that by hosting these walking training groups, AARP offers an opportunity for older adults to do a number of these things while learning something new, connecting with their peers, and hopefully having a lot of fun.

Get moving with our AARP Austin Walking Program.

Being healthy and exercising is very important in today's modern world, where it is increasingly easier to move less and less. So what better way to keep moving than joining a 10k team with AARP Texas?

Every Tuesday, all walking groups will meet in person. Those meetings start January 17 and run through April 11. The walking groups will also meet virtually every Thursday from January 19 through April 13.

AARP is excited to be hosting this training program. We look forward to building up a team ready for the challenge and collectively leading a healthier lifestyle during the 12 weeks that will hopefully continue once the 10k is over.
