From Resolution to Results: Volunteers Drive the 2026 Legislative Session
Even as some of you are hearing the last notes of the song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” we at AARP Florida are about to embark on “The Busiest Time of the Year”, the Florida legislative session. Advocacy is a core part of AARP’s mission, and at the state level, the legislative session is a rich if frenetic opportunity to advocate on a wide range of issues on behalf of Floridians ages 50 and over.
What truly sets this season apart is the unwavering commitment of our advocacy volunteers from across the state. These remarkable individuals are the backbone of our efforts at the Capitol. Their passion, dedication, and willingness to share their personal stories bring the real-world impact of legislation to life for lawmakers. Our volunteers are not just advocates—they are storytellers, educators, and champions for positive change. Through their presence and their voices, they ensure that policymakers hear the needs and concerns of everyday Floridians.
As we embark on the 2026 legislative session, our agenda is clear and focused on three critical areas:
- We are working to expand affordable and accessible housing options. Safe, stable housing is foundational to well-being, and we are committed to advancing policies that make it possible for more Floridians to age with dignity in their communities.
- We are dedicated to strengthening health security. This means improving Home and Community-Based Services, enhancing the quality of nursing home care, and ensuring that older adults have access to the support they need to live healthy, independent lives.
- Finally, we are intensifying our efforts to protect Floridians from fraud and abuse. With scams and exploitation on the rise, robust consumer protections are more important than ever.
None of this work would be possible without the tireless efforts of our volunteer advocates. Their involvement is the driving force behind our success, and I am deeply grateful for their service. As we begin this new year and legislative session, I invite everyone to join us—whether by volunteering, sharing your story, or supporting our advocacy in your community.
