From Classrooms to Communities: Two Leaders Bring Their Passion to AARP Jacksonville

Posted on 09/30/25

AARP Florida is proud to welcome two new volunteers in the Jacksonville chapter, Dr. Bernadette Kelley-Brown and Dr. Merryl Baker. Both bring decades of expertise and a passion for helping communities thrive.

Dr. Kelley-Brown spent more than 30 years as a professor at Florida A&M University, specializing in technology administration, grant management and dissertation direction. Now retired, she focuses on helping adults 50+ embrace technology safely. Partnering with the University of Florida, she teaches older adults how to use smartphones, protect personal information and avoid scams.

“It’s a misconception that older adults can’t learn technology,” Kelley-Brown said. “I am a proof that we can.”

Dr. Meryl Baker’s career began as a research psychologist with the U.S. Department of the Navy before retiring and transitioning into educational consulting. She also serves as a Florida Supreme Court-certified County mediator, volunteering time with the courts in Volusia County. As part of AARP’s Speakers Bureau, she now leads presentations on fraud prevention, brain health, and resources to help older adults live their best lives.

“If we can change anyone’s life in a small, positive way, then I think we’ve made a difference,” Baker said.

Both women share a vision of redefining what it means to age. Kelley-Brown emphasizes that older adults today are active and engaged, breaking away from outdated stereotypes. Baker highlights the importance of health, financial security and access to resources that allow people to age with dignity.

When asked about their legacy, Kelly-Brown said she hopes to leave behind love: “If you love yourself, you should love others.” For Baker, it’s hope: “Hope that there are people out there who care and will help you achieve your goals.”
