Fort Wayne Age-Friendly Advisory Council

A team of volunteers and City of Fort Wayne staff continues its hard work to make the community friendly to people of all ages.

Last month, Fort Wayne’s Age-Friendly Advisory Council met with Mayor Tom Henry to brief him on the progress it has made researching the needs of 50+ throughout the city.

“It was a privilege to get a small piece of Mayor Henry’s busy schedule,” Emily Gorman, AARP Indiana director of outreach, said. “Fort Wayne has made great strides to become more Age-Friendly.”

The council is composed of community members, AARP volunteers, and a representative from the mayor’s team. It is charged with developing an action plan that Fort Wayne’s elected officials and staff can conduct to improve the city by focusing on Eight Domains of Livability – outdoor spaces and buildings; transportation; housing; social participation; respect and social inclusion; work and civic engagement; communication and information; and community and health services.

Mayor Henry tasked the council with looking at what priorities within the domains of health, transportation, and housing are actionable and need funding.

Fort Wayne was the third Indiana municipality to join the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.
