AARP developed this family caregiver guide with you, the caregiver, in mind and as a starting point to help you find the services and support you might need throughout your journey.

Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs (225-342-7100) Network of Area Agencies on Aging provides services for older adults and caregivers including personal care, delivered meals, transportation, legal assistance and more.

Louisiana Aging and Disability Resource Center Provides information, resources and support to caregivers by connecting them to community-based services, support groups, counseling and educational programs via nine centers statewide.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (225-763-8700) Helps eligible households with home energy expenses, which may include heating/cooling bill payment, crisis bill payment and/or heating/cooling equipment repair/replacement.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (888-524-3578) Eligible households receive assistance through an Electronic Benefits Transfer card to cover a portion of their food budget, as well as nutritional education.

Disability Rights Louisiana (800-960-7705) Provides residents with disabilities resources and assistance relating to special education, legal status, public benefits, community integration, institutional rights, employment and rehabilitation, and abuse/neglect.

Louisiana Legal Aid Services Provides free or low-cost legal advice and/or representation for those unable to afford full-cost services.

Louisiana Department of Health’s Office of Aging and Adult Services Administers home- and community based long-term care services through various programs for individuals who are elderly or have disabilities, so they can remain in their homes and community.

Louisiana Department of Health’s Office of Behavioral Health (225-342-2540) Provides accountabilities for all behavioral health care, including mental health treatment services and addictive disorders. Operated by independent health care districts or authorities.

Louisiana Primary Care Association (225-927-7662) Represents statewide Community Health Centers that provide accessible, affordable, quality primary health care services for uninsured and medically underserved populations. Includes a tool to access local resources such as financial assistance, food pantries, medical care and other free or reduced-cost aid.

Long-Term Care Ombudsman (866-632-0922) Provides consumer protection advocacy services to residents of long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, specialty care facilities and boarding homes. Anyone can use an ombudsman to report a concern and get help resolving problems, including residents, residents’ family members and friends and long-term care facility employees.

Louisiana Housing Corporation (888-454-2001) Allocates federal and state funds to support the development of affordable, energy-efficient housing for low- to moderate-income families.

Permanent Supportive Housing (844-698-9075) Links affordable rental housing with individualized services to eligible people with severe and complex disabilities.

Louisiana Department of Health’s Office for Citizens With Developmental Disabilities (225-342-0095) Oversees public and private residential services and other services for eligible people with developmental disabilities.

Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (225-379-3060) Provides a search tool to locate transportation options for older adults, including door-to-door services, fixed route and ridesharing programs.

State Personal Assistance Services Program (225-383-1033; 866-966-6260) Provides personal assistance services to persons with significant disabilities to assist with daily living activities.

Louisiana-Mississippi Hospice & Palliative Care Association (888-546-1500) Provides hospice patients and their families resources to help make better choices regarding serious illness and end-of-life care.

Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency (800-521-4483) Provides support to families of the recently deceased and during the donation process.
