No matter where you are in your caregiving journey — starting to plan; taking care of a family member in your home, in a facility, or from a distance; or managing end-of-life caregiving responsibilities — having resources at your fingertips will make the process easier.

AARP developed this family caregiver guide with you, the caregiver, in mind and as a starting point to help you find the services and support you might need throughout your journey.

Caregiving Support

Caregiver Support Services (502-564-6930) Offers services for caregivers, including information about resources, assistance accessing services, counseling and training.

VA Caregiver Support (855-260-3274) Provides caregivers of veterans with resources, training, education, advice and support.

Finances

Kentucky Housing Corporation (800-633-8896 | 502-564-7630) State housing finance agency provides housing counseling services and information on home buying, loan products and downpayment assistance.

Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program (800-633-8100) Helps residents locate free or reduced-cost prescription drugs.

Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program (855-306-8959) Provides financial and medical assistance to eligible low-income families with a child living in the home. The program also helps family members find jobs or receive training to facilitate employment.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (800-456-3452) Provides financial assistance to help low-income households meet their home heating and/or cooling needs.

Legal

AppalReD Legal Aid (866-277-5733) Provides free civil legal services to eligible low-income and vulnerable residents in eastern and south- central Kentucky.

Kentucky Legal Aid (270-782-5740) Provides free civil legal services to low-income residents, disabled people and older adults in southwestern Kentucky.

Legal Aid of the Bluegrass (859-431-8200) Provides legal assistance to low- income families with children, older adults, vulnerable people and veterans in northern and central Kentucky.

Legal Aid Society (502-584-1254) Provides free civil legal assistance and representation to low-income individuals and families in Louisville and surrounding counties on issues related to income, family, housing, safety and health.

Health

Department for Medicaid Services (800-635-2570) Through the Medicaid waiver program, older adults who are eligible for nursing home payments can apply to receive medical and support services, allowing them to continue living at home.

Kynect (855-306-8959) Helps Kentucky’s families apply online for health insurance and public assistance benefits.

State Health Insurance Assistance Program (877-293-7447)
Provides one-on-one counseling and assistance to people with Medicare and their families. The agency can help with obtaining benefits, filing claims and understanding health care options.

Housing and Care Facilities

Long-Term Care Ombudsman (800-372-2991) Provides consumer protection advocacy services to residents of long-term care facilities, consisting of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, specialty care facilities and boarding homes. Anyone can use an ombudsman to report a concern and get help resolving problems, including residents, residents’ family members and friends, and long-term care facility employees.

Information and Services

Adult Protection Branch (800-752-6200 Adult Abuse Hotline) Provides information and investigates allegations of abuse, neglect and financial exploitation of vulnerable adults.

Community Action Kentucky (502-875-5863) Supports 23 partner agencies that provide social services related to asset building and financial planning, employment, education, transportation, housing and nutrition services.

Department for Aging and Independent Living (502-564-6930) Oversees and manages resources for older adults and people with disabilities and their caregivers, and provides an overview of aging and caregiver services.

Homeless and Housing Coalition of Kentucky (502-223-1834) Provides information on supportive housing programs and rental assistance for eligible low-income Kentuckians.

ITNBluegrass (859-252-8665) Membership-based program that provides transportation to Fayette and northern Jessamine County residents age 60 and older and visually impaired adults.

Metropolitan Housing Coalition (502-584-6858) Mobilizes private and public resources to provide fair, accessible and affordable housing for all Louisville residents.

Nutrition Assistance Branch (855-306-8959) Eligible households receive nutritional education and food assistance through an Electronic Benefits Transfer card to cover a portion of their food budget.

Kentucky Association of Hospice and Palliative Care (888-322-7317) Provides information about hospice and palliative care resources, including a Find a Hospice Provider tool.

Palliative Care Consumer and Professional Information and Education Program Provides information and links to resources about palliative care.
