AARP developed this family caregiver guide with you, the caregiver, in mind and as a starting point to help you find the services and support you might need throughout your journey.

Caregiver Support

Alabama Cares Program (800-243-5463)
Provides education, respite, assistance and supplemental services.

Alabama Lifespan Respite Resource Network (866-737-8252)
Includes voucher respite reimbursement services, free caregiver education, training, respite resource information and referrals for caregivers.

Finances

Alabama Department of Insurance (334-269-3550)
Provides a shopper’s guide for health insurance for senior citizens, including Medicare supplement insurance and long-term care insurance information. 

Alabama Family Trust (844-238-4630)
Provides for the establishment of a special needs trust that disburses funds to supplement the care, support and treatment of a disabled person or beneficiary in a way that complements any governmental entitlements like Social Security or Medicaid. 

Alabama Public Service Commission: Lifeline and Link-up Benefits (800-882-3919)
Facilitate telecommunications access to qualifying low-income residents through Link-up (discounted cost of installing a phone line) and Lifeline program (discount on the cost of monthly phone service).

Legal

Alabama Legal Help (866-456-4995)
Provides senior legal services and information on advanced directives, wills, powers of attorney and health care issues.

Legal Services of Alabama (866-456-4995)
Provides civil legal assistance to low-income Alabamians on a range of issues including problems with public benefits (SNAP and Social Security), housing issues and domestic violence.

Alabama Attorney General’s Office Consumer Interest Division (800-392-5658 or 334-242-7335)
Investigate and resolve consumers’ complaints and serve as mediators between Alabama consumers and businesses.

Health

Alabama Dementia (800-243-5463)
A resource for Alabama older adults who are living with dementia as well as their families and their caregivers.

Alabama Department of Public Health (800-252-1818)
Offers health-related programs and services, including the Alabama Health Seniors Program which provides information and resources to promote the health of older adults.

Alabama SenioRx Program (800-243-5463)
Offers free or low-cost prescription drugs for Alabamians who are age 55 and older and for persons with disabilities who are diagnosed with chronic health conditions requiring daily medication.

Housing and Care Facilities

Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program
(877-425-2243 or 334-242-5743)
Provides consumer protection advocacy services to residents of long-term care facilities consisting of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, specialty care facilities and boarding homes. Anyone can use an Ombudsman to report a concern and get help resolving problems including residents, residents’ family and friends, or employees of long- term care facilities.

Information and Services

Aging and Disability Resource Centers (800-243-5463)
Provide benefits screening, education and options counseling on long-term care services and supports for older adults, people with disabilities and their caregivers. 

Alabama Adult Protective Services (334-242-1350)
Report concerns about abuse, neglect and exploitation of elderly and disabled adults. Adult Abuse Hotline: 800-458-7214.

Alabama Department of Senior Services (800-243-5463)
Administers statewide programs on aging that cover all 67 counties through the Regional Planning Commissions and the local Area Agencies on Aging (AAA). Each of the AAAs provides comprehensive services through contracts and grants to a wide variety of local agencies, both public and private. Call to find local services.

Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (334-242-5077)
Provides resources and information for veterans and their caregivers.
