Event Spotlights Abuse and Exploitation

Posted on 07/08/21 by Carmel Snyder

Elder abuse is an intentional act or failure to act that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult. During his 22 years as a deputy district attorney in San Diego, Paul Greenwood prosecuted more than 700 felony cases of elder and dependent adult abuse, both physical and financial. Now he shares his knowledge and stories from the field to help others identify and report abuse and financial exploitation of older adults.

Greenwood, along with Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum and State Elder Exploitation Specialist Billie McNeely will be featured in AARP's webinar, "Spotlight on Elder Abuse," to be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 14, 2021.

"Many cases are not reported because elders are afraid or unable to tell police, friends, or family about the violence of financial crimes," Greenwood said. "Victims have to decide whether to tell someone they are being hurt or continue being abused by someone they depend upon or care for deeply."

Greenwood assisted with drafting Elder Abuse legislation for California Evidence Code. He is a national speaker on the topic and in 2019 was awarded the Vanguard Award at the Gulf States Elder Abuse conference. Oregon Attorney General Rosenblum, who has committed to assisting district attorneys and local law enforcement in prosecuting elder abuse during her time in office, will share what her office is doing in the fight against elder abuse. McNeely will share stories from the field and provide tips on how to spot financial exploitation.

The virtual event is free, but registration is required. Oregonians who cannot make the Webinar, but have registered for the event, will receive a link to the recording that they can watch on demand.

In addition, Greenwood and Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon Meredith Bateman will speak during an AARP Teletown Hall at 2 p.m. on July 14.
Greenwood was featured recently during a live interview with Oregon KATU-TV.
