Moving to a new place and starting a business from scratch would be a challenge for anyone. Think how hard it would be in a new industry … and a new country. Ana Isabel Vivas did all of that and more in her mid-50s. And she had a special helper by her side.

A few years ago, she left her home in Venezuela to move to Miami with family, but with no way to make a living. It was a challenge. So when Ana Isabel brought home some tulips to decorate the house and brighten her mood, daughter Anais noticed how happy those cheerful flowers made her. Anais convinced her mother to follow her passion for flowers and launch Aniska Creations.

The mother and daughter have built a successful small business in Miami that not only fills clients’ homes with fragrant bouquets,  but also helps others learn floral design through in-person and online bilingual courses .

Inspired by their passion and story, AARP is sharing the story of Aniska Creations on its Facebook Live show "AARP En Vivo Contigo.” And the two Latina businesswomen teach viewers how to make a beautiful bouquet in five easy steps.

A 2020 Stanford Research Report found Latino-owned businesses contributed about $500 billion to the economy in annual sales. The report also claims that Latino-owned employer businesses are growing revenues at a faster rate than White-owned employer businesses.

However, some Latinos believe in the stigma that if someone is over 50 years old, starting a business may be too challenging. We know that is not true, where at any age, creativity and entrepreneurship are celebrated.

"Research has shown that entrepreneurs 50+ are the lion share of small business owners, with women becoming the fastest-growing segment,” said AARP’s Felicia Brown. “AARP is committed to supporting and becoming a go-to resource for older entrepreneurs."
