Disaster Prep: Getting Ready for Tornados, Fires, Floods

Posted on 11/01/25 by AARP Bulletin

AARP Arkansas will host a disaster preparedness webinar on Tuesday, Dec. 9, with SBP, a national nonprofit that began in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

In 2006, a teacher and a lawyer who had left Washington, D.C., to volunteer with recovery efforts in New Orleans founded SBP to assist St. Bernard Parish in recovering from the storm that submerged nearly every home. The group rebuilt thousands of houses after Katrina but now also focuses on preparing communities to lessen the impact of disasters.

The webinar will help residents get ready for floods, tornadoes and fires; learn to pack a go kit; and better understand insurance policies.

Registration is encouraged at local.aarp.org/ar.
