Demarcus Andrews joins AARP North Carolina as Associate State Director for Advocacy

Demarcus Andrews of Durham, NC, has joined AARP North Carolina as Associate State Director of Advocacy. Among his responsibilities will be working with AARP Advocates and others to help advance state legislation and policy proposals to meet the needs of North Carolinians as they age.

Prior to AARP, Andrews served as the Director of Outreach and Engagement and the North Carolina Policy and Outreach Manager for the Center for Responsible Lending. In this role, he focused on predatory debt practices and student loan debt. Prior to joining CRL, Demarcus served as the Policy Advocate at Toxic Free NC, a non-profit organization that seeks to advance environmental health and justice.

Chris Brandenburg, AARP North Carolina Manager of Federal and State Advocacy said, "With economic security being such a vital issue to older adults, Demarcus's background on debt and fraud prevention will be very helpful in educating policymakers and the public about opportunities and pitfalls of legislative proposals."

Demarcus graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Gardner-Webb University. He also received a Master of Public Policy from Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy.

Andrews said, " My background has been entrenched in organizing, amplifying voices from marginalized communities to advance the issues most important to them. At AARP, I will draw on my education and organizing experience to advance public policy improvements that support the well being of adults as they age."

In his spare time, Demarcus enjoys spending time with his daughters (Covington and Cobi), fishing and jogging for exercise.
