Count and Be Counted
Staff from the Denver Area Census Office, representatives from the Colorado non-profit, Together We Count, and Denver Public Library Western History Dept. will host a 3-person panel discussion 6 - 8 p.m., Thursday, August 22, at the Dahlia Campus for Health and Well-Being*. This will be followed by an optional recruiting session for persons interested in working for the 2020 Census.
Panelists will discuss the mechanics and process of counting the 330 million U.S. population and the historical background of the Census, which began in 1790. Census 2020 challenges include reaching hard-to-count populations such as older adults, the homeless, and immigrant communities. The 2020 Census – perhaps the event of the decade - has been a burning issue for the past year. The controversial ‘citizenship question’ debate ended in June when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it could not appear on Census forms. Why all the uproar and brouhaha? It is a real ‘numbers’ game.
The data from the Census determines: how much funding states and cities receive from the federal government; the number of seats for each state in the U.S. House of Representatives; and the number of delegates for each state in the Electoral College for U.S. elections. The Census counts people of all ages, races, ethnic groups and nationalities, and is mandated under the U.S. Constitution to be taken every 10 years.
