AARP Wyoming will award Cheyenne’s Tracy Griffith Swaim with the organization’s Fraud Fighter of The Year award at the AARP offices this October.

Swaim is a Certified Fraud Examiner with a background in the legal field and as a fraud investigations and prevention leader in the financial services industry. Passionate about consumer education and victim advocacy, Swaim writes and speaks on social engineering, data privacy, scams and fraud prevention, and trends in bank fraud. Last year Swaim started making scam prevention presentations on behalf of AARP Wyoming, a few highlights include her work at the Promoting Our Women Warriors veterans event in Casper, as well as her presentations on AI.

“My favorite topics are in the consumer education space,” Swaim said. “The vast majority of consumer scams we will ever come across originate online. I love to hang out in that overlap of fraud prevention and cyber security - just making sure people understand data privacy and what risks you are taking online. It’s really cool out there, but you have to know who you are dealing with and interacting with online.”

Swaim has been working in the fraud and scam prevention space for a number of years. The North Carolina native started her professional career as a paralegal in a civil law firm helping those who she felt had been taken advantage of. Swaim’s next career move saw her work on bankruptcies, probate issues, and estates at a bank. When she discovered bankruptcy fraud in one of her cases, one of the investigators at the bank suggested she consider becoming a fraud investigator.

“I found I could take everything I did from helping out the little guy to investigating consumer fraud against the little guy,” Swaim said. “It charged me up to say, this person is in a bind, what could we do about it?”

Swaim’s husband is a Navy veteran whose career working in submarines has taken their family to South Carolina, and Hawaii. After his separation from the Navy in 2022, the family moved to Denver allowing Swaim to work for HTLF, the parent company of 10 different banking brands in the Midwest and West investigating fraud. When she found out her job could be done remotely, they moved to Cheyenne in 2022.

“Talking to people, training and teaching on this is what gets me out of bed in the morning. Any time I can help a consumer not click on that link or not take the weird phone call, that’s a win,” Swaim said. “When I was told I was the Fraud Fighter of The Year I was thrilled. AARP as a whole and the fraud fighting piece within that is a great partnership. With that branding behind you, you can accomplish a lot.”
