On Friday, October 25th, AARP and La Mesa Amor hosted a heartwarming celebration for Hispanic Heritage Month, bringing together community members to celebrate Puerto Rican culture through music, dance, and a focus on well-being. The morning was filled with learning, movement, and connection as attendees joined for a powerful experience designed to honor and uplift Hispanic heritage.

The event began with an energizing introduction to Puerto Rican folkloric dance, highlighting the rich history and vibrant culture of the island. Maestro Pedro Vilanova, along with the Afro Borinken Roots Performing Group and Richard Joel, led a captivating bomba class that brought attendees face-to-face with the spirit of Puerto Rico’s heritage. Participants learned the basics of bomba, a traditional dance rooted in Afro-Puerto Rican culture, which emphasizes rhythmic drumming and expressive movement. Maestro Vilanova shared stories about the cultural significance of bomba, explaining how the rhythms and movements reflect both the resilience and joy of Puerto Rican communities.

The class was not just a celebration of music and dance but also an invitation to explore the role of physical movement and cultural engagement in promoting brain health. Studies show that music and dance activities are essential for cognitive wellness, and attendees had the chance to experience firsthand how these art forms stimulate the brain. The event emphasized how cultural practices like bomba can be a pathway to not only preserving heritage but also fostering mental sharpness and emotional well-being.

Attendees left inspired, with new knowledge of Puerto Rican history, a deeper appreciation for cultural traditions, and a fresh reminder of how community-centered activities can promote wellness. The morning reinforced the value of connecting with our heritage, and AARP and La Mesa Amor's commitment to community health and cultural celebration shone brightly.

Thank you to all who joined us, danced with us, and helped make this Hispanic Heritage celebration an unforgettable experience! Keep an eye out for more events like this as we continue to promote community well-being through the power of culture.
