Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in San Antonio

Mexican Folklorico dance classes where you’ll learn footwork techniques and combinations. Salsa classes that improve balance and mental alertness. A virtual festival featuring the talents of Tejano and Conjunto artists. All this and more make up AARP Texas’ free events for San Antonio as we kick off Hispanic Heritage Month on Sept. 15.

AARP Texas has partnered with the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center to celebrate this special month with a series of month-long online classes taught by experienced traditional dance and music instructors.  

Register below to access a series of on-demand instructional videos, plus weekly live group virtual classes. Space is limited and access will be granted on a first come, first serve basis – so don’t wait! 

Sept. 15, 6:30 p.m. -- Intro to Flamenco 

Instructor Genevieve Obregon teaches this lively Tuesday class on the basics of Flamenco dance. You’ll learn the proper posture, palmas (percussive clapping), floreo and braceo (hand and arm work), marcaje (marking steps), turns and footwork. Ideal for anyone new to dance, you can register here: https://aarp.cvent.com/d/c7qsm2/

Sept. 16, 6 pm -- Intro to Folklorico 

Instructor Connie Espinoza teaches this Wednesday class on the basics of Mexican Folklorico Dance. You’ll practice footwork technique and combinations for this colorful, rhythmic dance. All experience levels welcome, you can register here: https://aarp.cvent.com/d/g7qs8j/

Sept. 17, 5 p.m. -- Mariachi Vocals

Sept. 17, 6 p.m. -- Salsa for Exercise 

Join us for a fun-filled salsa technique lesson, led by instructor Marlene Pita, geared toward getting us all up and moving. These Thursday lessons are a great way to improve balance and mental alertness. All experience levels welcome. Registration here:

Oct. 4, 12:30 p.m. – “Celebrando con AARP” concert 

This annual concert will feature entertainment from Tejano and Conjunto artists including David Farias, Shelly Lares, Los Texmaniacs and others.
