Celebrating Black History Month Through Gospel

Posted on 02/13/25

We all know that AARP Orlando loves a good party, whether it be through art, song, or dance. And, this month, we partnered with the Osceola Magic basketball team as well as the Black Empowerment & Community Council to showcase the voices of gospel in celebration of Black History Month.

"Black History Month: Celebration of Gospel" was an evening full of joy and worship. Local Black gospel groups shared a stage at Silver Spurs Arena side-by-side with famous gospel singer Maurette Brown Clark, performing an exclusive concert to Osceola Magic fans before players took the court for a Black History Month basketball game.

AARP Orlando volunteers were also front and center, educating and informing attendees about our local events, along with resources on everything from caregiving to fraud prevention.

“Black History Month is so important because we have to understand our [culture’s] history and foundation,” explains AARP Orlando volunteer John Perry. “This event combines my loves for gospel ministry and community service with my passion for AARP.”

AARP Orlando is proud to highlight the diversity of our community. For more information on local events near you, visit aarp.org/local.
