Celebrate Women's History Month through Woman-led Events

Posted on 03/10/22 by Marina Garcia

In March, we celebrate Women's History Month, focusing on honoring those who have stood up and made a difference in the county and their local communities. The month-long holiday began as only a week in March 1981 when Congress granted it a nationally recognized holiday. The week-long celebration was changed into a month by Congress five years later. AARP Texas is celebrating the month by providing residents of Houston a diverse list of woman-led events and programs throughout March that is open to all!

Want to get your sweat on over Zoom? Join FitMix Communities and AARP Texas with their weekly Fit Fridays: Zumba for Caregivers event. That's right! Every Friday at 10 a.m., until March 25, get your sweat on with this one-hour online class. FixMix Communities is a Houston-based non-profit that provides fun and accessible exercise-led classes either in-person or over Zoom. The event is focused on caregivers, but anyone can sign up for the classes. Those interested are encouraged to sign up online.

Want to whip out a new dish for friends and family? Try AARP Houston's virtual cooking series Brunch, Lunch, and Munch hosted by Beatrice Moore and Vernita Harris. Participants can learn the historical context of favorable dishes through this series while the hosts make them in real-time.

The duo is "Going Irish" on March 22. They'll be cooking Irish-themed meals such as Shepherd's Pie, sautéed cabbage, green pineapple smoothie, and a triple a green salad. Sounds tasty! Sign up to attend the virtual cooking class here, where recipes will also be shared so that participants can try to make the dishes themselves.

Suppose you're feeling a bit stressed or overwhelmed. In that case, we encourage you to relax your mind with Mindful Mondays, hosted by the Caregivers of Alzheimer's and Other Dementia Wellness Retreat and AARP Texas. Mindful Mondays is a workshop that can teach participants mindful tools and techniques to help them handle stressful situations.

The workshops are available as follows:

  • March 21, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.: "Stop and Breathe: We Can't Keep Caregiving Without these Tools" – establish self-agency through a better understanding of clear, easy techniques to regulate the nervous system.
  • April 4, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.: "Creating Meaningful Connections and Support" - Social engagement is one of the top predictors of longevity; learn how to create impactful relationships.
  • April 18, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.: "Feeling Anxious? You Can Change It"- Develop powerful coping mechanisms. Ease anxiety and improve your mental health.

The events are free to everyone, but registration is required to join the online workshops.
