Celebrate Pride 2021

Posted on 06/08/21 by Bandana Shrestha

This June we invite you to join us in celebrating Pride.
At AARP, we work hard every day to fight for and equip individuals to live their best lives. “What we do, we do for all” is a guiding principle articulated by our founder, distinguished educator Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, and we proudly carry it forward.
Join us for a special event we have planned to celebrate Pride this year and learn what Pride means to two AARP volunteers who are celebrating Pride with purpose!

Pride is ageless! Join AARP, Pride Northwest, and SAGE Metro Portland for a free virtual concert on June 15 at 5:30pm PT. Enjoy performances by contemporary artists who are breaking barriers in Nashville, lifting up the music of Black and indigenous communities, and fusing iconoclastic alt-rock with rood and old-time-music.

FIGHTING FOR VISIBILITY & EQUITY: LIZ JAMES

I’m 66, identify as a lesbian, my pronouns are she or they, and I’ve been ‘out’ since the age of 18. I attended my first, of many, pride parades in the 1970s in Houston. I currently reside as an ‘out’ member of the community in the Rogue Valley. Pride, to me, means believing that all members of the LGBTQ+ alphabet, who, by the way, are members of all communities, deserve being safely visible and seen, having safe, welcoming, equal and equitable access to resources and services, and equal rights. Currently, I’m very proud to be supporting that endeavor in Oregon by being ‘out’ through various volunteer efforts, including AARP Oregon, and most recently by participating in and promoting the first statewide survey of and for LGBTQ+ 55+ adults. This ground-breaking project is funded by the Oregon Dept. of Human Services Office of Aging and People with Disabilities. Liz James, 66, Jacksonville
