To recognize the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., AARP in Cincinnati and the MLK Coalition will host a special celebration on Monday, Jan. 20.

The theme of this year’s event is “Sounds of Struggle…Songs of Freedom.” The program includes a noon ceremony featuring keynote speaker Tammy Kernodle, professor of musicology at Miami University, with performances by the Martin Luther King Chorale and theCincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s Nouveau Chamber Players.

AARP in Cincinnati will also award an honor to P. Eric Abercrumbie, for championing Dr. King’s dream of equality. Abercrumbie is a former executive director for diversity and inclusion at the University of Cincinnati and the founder of the Black Man Think Tank.

Among his honors, he was presented a key to the city by then-Mayor Dwight Tillery and was selected as grand marshal of the 2019 Black Family Reunion Parade.

Lunch will be served after the MLK Coalition program, from 2 to 4 p.m. The celebration and luncheon will be held at the historic Music Hall Ballroom, at 1241 Elm St. Lunch is free for AARP members and guests, but registration is required.
