Celebrate Day of the Dead by Making Sugar Skulls

Posted on 09/30/18 by TheAARPBulletin, AARP Blog Author

Master an artistic method of honoring loved ones who have passed on—decorating sugar skulls.

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center will host a free workshop for AARP members on Thursday, Oct. 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at 723 S. Brazos St., San Antonio.

The skulls are part of the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. To celebrate, altars and grave sites are decorated with flowers and the favorite foods of departed family and friends.

The confections—sugar molded in the form of skulls and whimsically decorated in vibrant colors—are often included.

This is the first year AARP in San Antonio has offered a dedicated workshop to decorate sugar skulls during its annual Day of the Dead celebration.

Each participant in the class will receive a skull and decorative materials, like royal icing, sequins and beads, and view a short documentary on Day of the Dead altars and how sugar skulls have been used to decorate them.

The workshop is a response to popular demand, said Lisa Ann Rodriguez, AARP associate state director of advocacy and outreach, adding that spaces may run out quickly because the event is limited to 75 participants.

“There’s been a lot of interest,” Rodriguez said. RSVP at
