Highlighting Baton Rouge

Caregivers' Stories Boost Advocacy Efforts

Posted on 12/31/19 by The AARP Bulletin

The Bayou State is home to 680,000 family caregivers providing $6 billion in unpaid assistance annually. With that come stories of personal struggle and persistence.

These stories are what make AARP Louisiana fight even harder to support family caregivers. There is Lucie Titus, for example, who tried to install a video camera in her mother’s room at a nursing facility after her mom could not explain injuries she sustained there.

After advocacy by AARP Louisiana in 2018, the state enacted the Virtual Visitation Act, allowing people to install, at their own cost and labor, video cameras in loved ones’ rooms.

AARP Louisiana is now working to make sure the law is fully implemented. Do you have a story you want to share? Tell AARP Louisiana by emailing laaarp@aarp.org.
