Caregivers Can Dial 211 for Advice, Emotional Support

Posted on 03/01/24

Supporting family caregivers -- AARP and the South Dakota 211 Helpline Center are working together to offer a service that provides people who care for parents, spouses, and other loved ones with regular phone or text support from trained, local 211 Helpline Center staff.

Eligible family caregivers are encouraged to sign up!

Participants will receive 12 calls from staff throughout the six-month program. The calls provide emotional support and offer a confidential space to talk about the highs and lows of caregiving. Staff check in on how the caregiver and the loved one are doing and help them identify resources and programs available locally.

AARP South Dakota was originally one of only six pilot locations across the country selected to participate in this partnership with United Way Worldwide. The collaboration aims to reduce burnout and encourage family caregivers to practice self-care. The program has since expanded to other states.

It's free, and any South Dakota resident who cares for an older adult, without pay, is eligible. Call 211 to learn more and to enroll in the service, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Caregiving may be one of the most important, and challenging, roles you’ll ever take on. No matter where you are in your caregiving journey — starting to plan; taking care of a family member in your home, in a facility, or from a distance; or managing end-of-life caregiving responsibilities — having resources at your fingertips will make the process easier.

AARP developed this family caregiver guide with you, the caregiver, in mind and as a starting point to help you find the services and support you might need throughout your journey.
